Liposuction is a very common popular procedure. It is designed to permanently remove fatty tissue, removing fatty tissue in subcutaneous areas not responding to diet and exercise. These areas can include the thighs, abdomen, knees and neck (under the chin). Dr. Wong has a special interest in male gynaecomastia (male breast). Liposuction is most successful in people with good skin tone who have localised fatty deposits. It is not a treatment for obesity. To maintain safety during the procedure, there is a limit on how much fat can be removed during each procedure (to prevent excessive loss of fluid). A variety of factors can affect the result: physical condition, genetic makeup, exercise, smoking, alcohol intake and skin elasticity. The surgeon makes a small discreet opening in the areas to be treated. A cannula with a blunt tip is inserted in a small incision, attached to a suction machine. The procedure may take an hour or more, depending on how the area involved. There will be some swelling and bruising following the procedure. Wound infection is rare. You will need to wear a special garment for a few weeks to help reduce swelling and provide support during the healing process and to assist in retraction of the skin. Sutures will be removed in about 7 days. Results are recognisable almost immediately and will continue to improve as swelling subsides. Most people are up and walking the same day after the surgery. Increase activity gently over 2-4 weeks. Your may return to work in the office about 4-5 days after the operation (14 days for active employment). Older patients with reduced skin elasticity may not achieve the same results as younger patients with tight skin. Liposuction carries a risk for individuals with medical problems such as diabetes, heart or lung disease, poor circulation and those who have recently have surgery near the area to be contoured. Have a realistic expectation of what the procedure can do for you.
